RIDGEWOOD PROSTHODONTIST PIONEERS IN THIS REVOLUTIONARY NEW PROCEDURE Dr. Kenneth Hilsen of Ridgewood Dental Associates in Ridgewood, New Jersey has announced the successful completion of a revolutionary new dental restoration procedure which he has named "Smile Today." In one day Dr. Hilsen and his colleague, oral surgeon Dr. John Kallis, removed all of their patientÂ’s teeth and implanted a full new set of temporaries. Even more amazingly, the patient reported experiencing neither swelling nor pain and was immediately able to resume his normal work and social life. Pun Tung Siu first came to Dr. Hilsen with loose and missing teeth. "This case presented complete periodontal breakdown," says Dr. Hilsen. "His genetic makeup, coupled with inadequate home care, bacterial infection and poor dental care, caused such deterioration that his only options were upper and lower dentures or complete implant rehabilitation." Siu decided to undergo complete restoration. The doctors conducted preliminary examinations to determine that his jaw bone was healthy enough to support full implants. Dr. Hilsen also took impressions so that on the day of the surgery, a full set of temporary teeth would be ready. In one day, Siu received both general and local anesthesia and had all of his remaining teeth extracted. In a few hours, a total of sixteen implants were placed in both his upper and lower arches, and temporary teeth were placed upon the implants. The patient went home that evening and did not even need to take a pain killer. He reported no swelling or discomfort, and was able to fully function in his daily routine. "I also had a beautiful smile to show in only one day!" he says It will take about three months for the implants to fuse with his gums and bone, but during that time Siu will be able to go about his normal life with a beautiful set of temporary teeth. Once Dr. Hilsen and his team determine that the healing is complete, they will create and place 24 permanent crowns upon the 16 implants. "In many ways, implants are better than the patientÂ’s own teeth," says Dr. Hilsen. "Implants do not suffer from the periodontal disease that destroyed his original teeth. In addition, they do not get cavities or ever need root canals. There is a better than 95% chance that these implants, which took one day to provide, will last his entire lifetime." "Now I can speak, chew, and smile with confidence," says Siu. "It truly is a modern medical miracle." Dr. Hilsen is confident that this procedure will make a dramatic difference in the lives of patients in need of complete dental restoration. Great strides in technology have enabled prosthodontists to give patients new smiles without great pain and in a relatively minimal amount of time. "Patients used to resist the idea of dental implants because they feared that the recovery time would be long and uncomfortable," says Dr. Hilsen. "They didn't think that they could get back to their jobs and their daily lives right away. That is no longer the case, as evidenced by this successful implementation of Smile Today." Dr. Kenneth L. Hilsen, D.D.S.,F.A.C.D, Medical Director of Ridgewood Dental Associates was just awarded Fellowship in the American College of Dentists in recognition of his years of achievement in dentistry. Dr. Hilsen is a prosthodontist, one of nine specialties recognized by the American Dental Association. Prosthodontists are dentists who have undergone at least three years of additional specialty training in the restoration and replacement of teeth.
